Launched the new call for applications for the National PhD in Space Science and Technology, the program resulting from a fruitful consortium collaboration formed by 20 Universities and 7 national Research Institutions, including Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies, which has been always characterizing its training, research, third mission activities with an interdisciplinary approach, the same approach of this innovative PhD, whose call for applications is open until Monday, August 8, 2022. As an associated institution, Sant'Anna School is providing support for a fellowship on the topic of "Photonic Integrated Sensor Systems for Space Applications".

The triennial Ph.D. program is based administratively at University of Trento and offers seven curricula, representing the interdisciplinary aspect of the space field as follows:

  • Observation of the Universe;
  • Earth and the Sun-Earth System;
  • Planetary Sciences;
  • Astrobiology, Life Sciences and Space Medicine;
  • Space Sensing and Instrumentation;
  • Engineering and technologies of satellite platforms;
  • Economics, law and space diplomacy.

The Ph.D. program in Space Science and Technology aims to train PhD students and young researchers in the field of science, engineering, technology and international relations in the space field through the acquisition and development of knowledge, skills and expertise in the research areas of interest to the sponsoring consortium.

"Italy has an important tradition in the space sector, which saw our Country in third place in the space race in the 1960s, and which today is represented by a complete supply chain that goes from university education, to research, to industry, with realization capabilities ranging from constellations of small satellites to telecommunications, from fundamental science to technology, from earth observation services to launch ones", as highlighted by the coordinator of the PhD program, Roberto Battiston, professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Trento.
